Rolled oats are the base of every Hudson Henry granola. Here's what they are, what they bring to a bowl, and why we only use gluten-free oats.
What are rolled oats?
Rolled oats, also called old-fashioned oats, are whole oat groats that are steamed and then flattened. That keeps the whole grain intact while giving granola its familiar flaky, toasty texture once it's baked.
What oats bring nutritionally
- Whole grain: rolled oats are a 100% whole grain.
- Fiber: oats contain fiber, including beta-glucan, the soluble fiber oats are best known for.
- Plant protein: oats have more protein than most other grains.
- Minerals: oats naturally contain manganese, phosphorus, magnesium and iron.
Together with the nuts and seeds in each recipe, a 1/4 cup (25g) serving of Hudson Henry granola has 2g of dietary fiber and 3g of protein. Every product page lists the full nutrition facts for that flavor.
How we use rolled oats
Oats are the first ingredient in all six of our flavors. We bake them with pure maple syrup and extra virgin olive oil (organic coconut oil in Cashew Coconut), then add nuts, seeds and coconut depending on the flavor. Try them in Maple Pecan Coconut, Cashew Coconut, Maple Walnut, or The OG, our simplest recipe, made without nuts or coconut.
Why our oats are gluten-free
Oats are naturally gluten-free, but conventional oats are often cross-contaminated with wheat in the field or during processing. We use gluten-free oats, and all of our granola is certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO). For more, read what certified gluten-free really means.
